Under the leadership of Jim Harbaugh, the Michigan Wolverines have invested heavily in the football program. In addition to Harbaugh's massive salary, Michigan is paying top dollar for assistant coaches like former NFL assistant Pep Hamilton and the investments have worked out for the Maize and Blue at this point. However, the lure of Ann Arbor is apparently not enough for one current Michigan staffer.
PressBox Online reports that Michigan special advisor and associate head coach Biff Poggi is set to leave the program. His next step, though, is the surprise, as Poggi is reportedly headed back to the high school ranks to take over as the head coach of St. Frances Academy in Baltimore.
Obviously, this is a bizarre career choice in some ways, but Poggi's history might be indicative. First, he is the father of current Michigan senior fullback Henry Poggi and 2016 was the only season in which the senior Poggi was on Harbaugh's staff. Prior to that, he was a well-respected high school coach and, with his son set to move on, it could make sense that he was looking to return to his roots.
Still, it isn't every day that you see a staffer willingly leave a blue blood program to be a high school coach and that is apparently what Biff Poggi is going to be doing.
