In the days following Georgia defensive end Chauncey Rivers' third arrest in seven months, head coach Kirby Smart decided to take further action. On Friday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Rivers was dismissed from the team after he was arrested in DeKalb County on drug-related charges earlier this week.
According to the AJC, the charges include a felony violation of Georgia's Controlled Substance Act. The other charges listed were possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, using a container to keep drugs, and parking in a disabled parking spot.
"It's extremely disappointing," head coach Kirby Smart said in a released statement. "He's been given previous opportunities to remain on our football team but continues to exhibit a lack of good judgment and commitment to the standards we require and expect from our players. He's put himself in a difficult position but we hope he finds a path that will provide some direction in his future."
Rivers was going to have a three-game suspension to start the 2016 season after two marijuana arrests last year. During his true freshman year, he played mostly on special teams accounting for four total tackles.
