Kentucky has been looking to end one of the worst losing streaks in the country to a single team as they hosted Florida on Saturday night. The Wildcats had lost 30 consecutive games to Florida and it will go to 31 with a 28-27 score in what turned out to be a thriller.
Kentucky quarterback Stephen Johnson had three passing touchdowns with 190 yards while completing 17-of-25 pass attempts. The Wildcats also had some balanced rushing with 1 yards on the ground. Florida struggled so badly that they switched quarterbacks from Feleipe Franks to Luke Del Rio in the second half, but Del Rio struck a chord with the Florida offense and got them exactly what they needed.
Florida's last drive came down to a thing of beauty as they used up almost all of the remaining 6:40 left on the clock when they got the ball back. With less than a minute left, the Gators drew up the perfect play to tie the game:
And then hit the PAT to go up 28-27. The defense had to play another 45 seconds and pulled off the stunner despite Kentucky pretty much going up and down almost on it almost all night. Kentucky had a fantastic run to give them an easy chip shot field goal for a win, but the play was called back because of a hold and that was too tough for Kentucky to overcome as their kicker missed a potential game-winning 56-yard field goal.
While Florida's passing game was suspect, the running game was pretty strong once the Gators figured out that Malik Davis was the go-to guy. He finished with 93 rushing yards on 21 carries while team as a whole finished with 186 yards on the ground. There may also be a bit of a quarterback controversy now as Franks' starting job doesn't seem to be secure now.
Florida will host Vanderbilt next week and Kentucky will host Eastern Michigan.
