The NFL MVP race essentially came down to just two names by the end of the year: veteran Tom Brady of the New England Patriots, and young-gun Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers.
It looks like a shifting of the guard, as Newton was named the NFL MVP on Saturday night ahead of the Super Bowl.

Newton had a monster season while leading the Panthers to a 15-1 record, throwing for 3,837 yards and 35 touchdowns. Newton also accounted for another 636 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. These accomplishments also helped Newton win Offensive Player of the Year on Saturday.
Of course, this isn't the first time that Cam Newton has been named the best player in his respective football league; the former Auburn quarterback won the Heisman Trophy in 2010, later leading his Tigers to a win in the BCS National Championship Game.
Can Newton do the same this year for Carolina? Well, he's got the Super Bowl on Sunday, and the Panthers are currently the favorite over the Denver Broncos. And if the Panthers win, Newton won't just be adding a Super Bowl ring to career his accolades, as he will likely have a Super Bowl MVP Trophy to put in that case, too.
Super Bowl 50 will kick off at about 6:30 p.m. EST on Sunday.
