Hampton coach Connell Maynor has resigned from the school on his own terms after four seasons at the helm, according to the Daily Press. The move came two days after the Pirates won their sixth game and clinched a winning season as well as four days after the school announced an impending conference switch.
The 48-year old coach said that he was not forced out and he is going to pursue other avenues for work. Here is a statement he released in relation to his resignation.
"There's a lot going on, and it's time for me to leave. It's best for me and my family at this point for me to pursue other avenues.
"I want to thank Hampton University, Dr. (President William) Harvey and Mr. Marshall for all they've done by giving me the opportunity to coach Division I football. I'm forever in their debt, but it's time to move on."
Maynor played at North Carolina A&T as well as Winston-Salem State before that. He ended up in the Arena Football League where he played from 1996 to 2006 for several teams. He ended up at WSSU as the head coach where he led the team to the Division-II playoffs three times and three undefeated seasons in conference play.
He took over Hampton after that for the 2014 season and he will finish his tenure there with a 20-25 record there. Defensive coordinator Michael Ketchum will take over in the interim head coaching duties.
