Germany Eliminated from 2018 World Cup in Group Stage

Germany, the No. 1 soccer team in the world and defending world champions, has officially been bounced from the World Cup in the group stage. If that is hard to believe, it should be. It is the first time since 1938 they have failed to advance from the first round.

Germany, the No. 1 soccer team in the world and defending world champions, has officially been bounced from the World Cup in the group stage.

If that is hard to believe, it should be. It is the first time since 1938 they have failed to advance from the first round.

Recent history has not been kind to the defending champs on soccer's grandest stage as Spain and Italy didn't make it to the knockout round in 2014 and 2010, respectively, and South Korea's stunning 2-0 victory on Wednesday knocked Germany to last place in Group F, out of contention to become the first repeat champion since Brazil in 1962, and an early trip home from Russia.

It caused quite the celebration for Mexico fans, too, as the country advances to the Round of 16 for the seventh-straight World Cup.

Calling Germany's 2018 World Cup a disappointment is likely an understatement. They struggled in an 1-0 opening-match loss to Mexico, was far from sharp in a 2-1 victory over Sweden, and completely fell flat on their face against South Korea.

Simply put, stars Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller, and others struggled to put the ball in the back of the net.

Now all Germany can do is wait for another chance at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
