It isn't often that a former top-flight recruit waits until June to choose the transfer route but that is reportedly what will be happening with now-former Oregon quarterback Travis Jonsen. Aaron Fentress of CSN NW brings word that Jonsen, who once ranked as the No. 4 overall dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2015, will be leaving the program to pursue a transfer and Riverside City College will be the next landing spot.
From there, Jonsen is expected to pursue a transfer back to the FBS level for the 2018 season but this is certainly huge news. The report indicates that Jonsen's decision comes as a direct result of losing the quarterback battle with incumbent starter Justin Herbert and, while Jonsen elected to stay through the transition to Willie Taggert as the team's head coach, he was apparently not prepared for life as a backup moving forward in Eugene.
Several programs will undoubtedly show interest in Jonsen should be perform well at the JUCO level and he was once offered by the likes of Alabama, Penn State and Notre Dame (among others) as a high school prospect. With the defection, Oregon now has significant concerns behind Herbert on the quarterback depth chart but the bigger national story will be the pending availability of Travis Jonsen.
