Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher announced on Thursday that defensive end Josh Sweat underwent meniscus surgery on his right knee on Thursday.

The original injury occurred last Thursday in practice before Florida State's game against Louisville. Sweat still played in that game, but he did not record a tackle.

Florida State star safety Derwin James is also out after a meniscus injury, and James is expected to be out for at least several more weeks. The good news on Sweat is that the injury was much less significant, at least according to Fisher.

"Josh went ahead and had his surgery today on that nick. He tried to go a day or two, but it swelled again. So we went ahead and did it. Hopefully it will only be a week and a half or so on that deal.

Sweat will miss the Seminoles' game against South Florida on Saturday, but Fisher says he could be back in a week or two.

Jacob Pugh and Brian Burns will get playing time at defensive end in Sweat's absence.
