There are so many reasons to lose faith in this world. Everything seems to be going out of whack. World conditions seem to be getting worse from climate change to corruption in government.

Personal trials can also throw you off balance: a family member is diagnosed with a debilitating disease or meets an accident; you get laid off or your colleague gets promoted even if you believe you worked harder and longer; your lover cheats on you; the doctor says your baby will be born with a defect; or, someone breaks in your house or you get swindled.

The unfairness of life can make us cynical or depressed. It can shake one’s faith. You might think if there is a God and if He is loving, why are bad things happening to the innocent? On a personal level, you may ask yourself, “What have I done to deserve this?”

Faith Has an Object

Faith isn’t blind. It always has an object—people have faith in something or someone.

You choose to believe in God, yourself, and others regardless of the negative chatter in your head and others’ opinions. Faith encompasses your beliefs about the wisdom, power, and love of your Creator.

It also includes beliefs about who you are and what you are meant to be based on God’s unique plan for you. And finally, it includes your beliefs about others, always believing in the best of them and giving them the benefit of the doubt before judging them.

Faith-Building is an Ongoing Process

Everyone exercises faith in different ways for various objects. It is like a muscle that gets stronger every time you decide to set your mind on faith-filled beliefs instead of your worries or despite what people say or do to you. The resistance coming from difficult circumstances and doubts are what exercises your faith.

Your faith will grow as you develop these habits and attitudes:

1. Spend regular time on the object of your faith.

If you want to strengthen your faith in your religious belief, start in the morning: pray and meditate. If your faith is inspired by a role model, feed your mind with their words or written works of people who share your beliefs.

2. Have a thankful heart.

Dissatisfaction and negativity can’t reside in a mind that’s full of gratitude. It can make your faith waver. Offer thanks to God for another day of life, the ability to breathe, eat, and move.

3. Identify your fears and shift your focus.

Copy scriptures and positive declarations on sticky notes or store them on your phone then memorize and recite them. Uttering declarations out loud will help put faith-filled beliefs at the forefront of your mind.

Remember the times when your prayers were answered and when you were able to overcome difficulties instead of dwelling on regrets, failures, and shameful experiences.

4. Hang around people who spark faith and hope.

Faith and hope are contagious so find friends who are encouraging in speech and action.

Igniting Hope in 40 Days author Steve Backland recommends seven types of people to surround yourself with: encouragers who inspire you to overcome; challengers, or those who may disagree with you but help you rise above our mediocrity or complacency; listeners or those who help you process your thoughts without judgment and find solutions to problems within yourself; historians or long-time trusted friends who will remind you of how much we have overcome when the going gets tough; visionaries or people who will aid you in thinking outside the box and making strategies; students or people who you can build up; and mentors or those who are already successful in what you want to do or what you’re doing.

5. Reach out to others.
Hope Quotes

As mentioned in the third point, you need other people who can encourage and mentor you. There is strength when you open up yourself to helping others.

Faith is described as “belief with legs.” We have to act on our beliefs and move forward while what we hope for isn’t a reality yet. But be patient with yourself and keep that faith burning inside you and guiding you toward your goal in life. Building and strengthening your faith will take time because it is a life-long journey.

Faith Quotes

When it’s difficult or painful to hope, apply the five steps and fill your mind with these faith quotes:

5. Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.” – J.R.R. Tolkien

6. “I think if I’ve learned anything about friendship, it’s to hang in, stay connected, fight for them, and let them fight for you. 7. “I have great faith in fools – self-confidence my friends will call it.” – Edgar Allan Poe

8. “If he’s not calling you, it’s because you are not on his mind. If he creates expectations for you, and then doesn’t follow through on little things, he will do same for big things. Be aware of this and realize that he’s okay with disappointing you. Don’t be with someone who doesn’t do what they say they’re going to do. If he’s choosing not to make a simple effort that would put you at ease and bring harmony to a recurring fight, then he doesn’t respect your feelings and needs. “Busy” is another word for “asshole.” “Asshole” is another word for the guy you’re dating. You deserve a fcking phone call.” – Greg Behrendt

14. “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” – C. S. Lewis

15. “I have come to accept the feeling of not knowing where I am going. And I have trained myself to love it. Because it is only when we are suspended in mid-air with no landing in sight, that we force our wings to unravel and alas begin our flight. And as we fly, we still may not know where we are going to. But the miracle is in the unfolding of the wings. You may not know where you’re going, but you know that so long as you spread your wings, the winds will carry you.” – C. JoyBell C.

22. “Therefore, dear Sir, love your solitude and try to sing out with the pain it causes you. For those who are near you are far away… and this shows that the space around you is beginning to grow vast…. be happy about your growth, in which of course you can’t take anyone with you, and be gentle with those who stay behind; be confident and calm in front of them and don’t torment them with your doubts and don’t frighten them with your faith or joy, which they wouldn’t be able to comprehend. Seek out some simple and true feeling of what you have in common with them, which doesn’t necessarily have to alter when you yourself change again and again; when you see them, love life in a form that is not your own and be indulgent toward those who are growing old, who are afraid of the aloneness that you trust…. and don’t expect any understanding; but believe in a love that is being stored up for you like an inheritance, and have faith that in this love there is a strength and a blessing so large that you can travel as far as you wish without having to step outside it.” – Rainer Maria Rilke

Remember men are never to busy to get what they want.” – Greg Behrendt

And it’s the most painful thing you’ll ever have to do and that you’ve ever done. But what’s yours is yours. Whether it’s up in the sky or here in your hands. And one day, it’ll fall from the sky and hit you in the head real hard and that time, you won’t have to put it back in the sky again.” – C. JoyBell C.

Thus if you have really handed yourself over to Him, it must follow that you are trying to obey Him. But trying in a new way, a less worried way. Not doing these things in order to be saved, but because He has begun to save you already. Not hoping to get to Heaven as a reward for your actions, but inevitably wanting to act in a certain way because a first faint gleam of Heaven is already inside you.” – C.S. Lewis

Success, popularity, and power can indeed present a great temptation, but their seductive quality often comes from the way they are part of the much larger temptation to self-rejection. When we have come to believe in the voices that call us worthless and unlovable, then success, popularity, and power are easily perceived as attractive solutions. The real trap, however, is self-rejection. As soon as someone accuses me or criticizes me, as soon as I am rejected, left alone, or abandoned, I find myself thinking, “Well, that proves once again that I am a nobody.” … [My dark side says,] I am no good… I deserve to be pushed aside, forgotten, rejected, and abandoned. Self-rejection is the greatest enemy of the spiritual life because it contradicts the sacred voice that calls us the “Beloved.” Being the Beloved constitutes the core truth of our existence.” – Henri J.M. Nouwen

And this accelerates to the point where you actually experience the miraculous. (quoted by Carol Lynn Pearson in Consider the Butterfly)” – Deepak Chopra

56. “Well, it’s true that I have been hurt in my life. Quite a bit. But it’s also true that I have loved, and been loved. and that carries a weight of its own. A greater weight, in my opinion. It’s like that pie chart we talked about earlier. in the end, I’ll look back on my life and see that the greatest piece of it was love. With faith we are accountable to each other, to ourselves, and to a higher truth. Religion is flawed, but only because man is flawed. The church consists of a brotherhood of imperfect, simple souls wanting only to be a voice of compassion in a world spinning out of control.” – Dan Brown

59. “You picked a lemon, throw it away lemonade is overrated. Freaks should remain at the circus, not in your apartment. You already have one asshole. You don’t need another. Make a space in your life for the glorious things you deserve. Have faith.” – Greg Behrendt

And then I’d just feel a prayer.” – L.M. Montgomery

67. “There are times when solitude is better than society, and silence is wiser than speech. We should be better Christians if we were more alone, waiting upon God, and gathering through meditation on His Word spiritual strength for labour in his service. We ought to muse upon the things of God, because we thus get the real nutriment out of them. . . . Why is it that some Christians, although they hear many sermons, make but slow advances in the divine life? Because they neglect their closets, and do not thoughtfully meditate on God’s Word. They love the wheat, but they do not grind it; they would have the corn, but they will not go forth into the fields to gather it; the fruit hangs upon the tree, but they will not pluck it; the water flows at their feet, but they will not stoop to drink it. From such folly deliver us, O Lord. . . .” – Charles Spurgeon

68. “We are saved by faith alone, but the faith that saves is never alone.” – Martin Luther

69. “Faith is walking face-first and full-speed into the dark. Whitney

Gratitude therefore takes nothing for granted, is never unresponsive, is constantly awakening to new wonder and to praise of the goodness of God. For the grateful person knows that God is good, not by hearsay but by experience. And that is what makes all the difference.” – Thomas Merton

94. “there is a God, there always has been. I see him here, in the eyes of the people in this [hospital] corridor of desperation. This is the real house of God, this is where those who have lost God will find Him… there is a God, there has to be, and now I will pray, I will pray that He will forgive that I have neglected Him all of these years, forgive that I have betrayed, lied, and sinned with impunity only to turn to Him now in my hour of need. I pray that He is as merciful, benevolent, and gracious as His book says He is.” – Khaled Hosseini
