Miami head coach Mark Richt is generally one of the looser coaches in college football as far as transfers go. He doesn't usually restrict transfers, but he is apparently doing that with graduate transfer quarterback Evan Shirrefs.
While we appreciate the University of Miami recruiting our student athletes, we do not agree with the decision to restrict QB #GradTransfer Evan Shirreffs.
We sincerely hope this matter can be resolved quickly.

Even FS1's Bruce Feldman was confused by the restrictions.
This is curious especially since Richt had been as open as any coach when it came to not restricting his former players where they could transfer (esp within the SEC) and this case involves a grad transfer. https://t.co/ZsYFysJ83d

Shirrefs made rare appearances during his career since he was always behind Brad Kaaya and Malik Rosier. He announced earlier in January that he would be transferring, but he probably didn't think that he would be hit with any restrictions since he actually graduated from Miami and really should be a "free agent" this offseason.
However, the report says that he won't be able to go anywhere else inside the ACC or go to a school that is going to be a Miami opponent in the next two years. Shirrefs will have two years of eligibility remaining wherever he does end up going and should be eligible to play right away.
He appeared in four games this season and completed two of his seven passes on the season.
