It was reported back in August that Alabama quarterback Jake Coker had suffered a foot injury in practice. However, it did not seem too serious at the time, as Coker rejoined the team just a few days later, and he went on to start all but one game for the Crimson Tide in 2015.
Well, according to AL.com, Coker played the entire season with two screws in his foot due to that injury suffered before the season.
"I broke my big right toe in August, and I had two big screws put in it right after I broke it," said Coker to WNSP radio in Mobile, AL. "Finally, I got them out on Friday. I'm dealing with that right now."
While a broken toe is not the biggest injury in the world, it can certainly be aggravating and affect a quarterback's ability to plant while throwing the ball. However, as QB Country's David Morris noted, the injury could be rather painful at times.
"Even when the toe healed the screws were still protruding out of the bone into the skin which would, obviously, aggravate the foot or the toe. It's like a big blister on the side of his foot. It has to influence you, but it shows how tough he is. It re-iterated that toughness."
Injury aside, Coker still had a great year as the Crimson Tide starter in 2015. Coker threw for 3,110 yards and 21 touchdowns in 15 games, with Alabama winning all 14 games that Coker started.
Coker was a huge part of Alabama's success in the College Football Playoff, throwing for 621 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions in the two games against Michigan State and Clemson. The performance helped Alabama capture their fourth national title under head coach Nick Saban, and it validated Coker as a legitimate college football quarterback.
These accomplishments were not good enough for Coker to be invited to the NFL Combine, though, as he is currently fighting an uphill battle to find a way into the NFL.
