Defense lawyers for convicted killer and former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez say they were unaware that Hernandez's phone calls from a Massachusetts jail several years ago were secretly recorded. Because of that, his attorneys could reportedly seek a retrial, per the Boston Herald.
Hernandez is currently serving a life sentence for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd and is also awaiting trial for a double murder in Boston in 2012. One of his attorneys said his team is investigating the matter.
"We had no prior knowledge of any database breach," said Ronald Sullivan, a Harvard professor and one of Hernandez's attorneys. "We will look into the matter further."
According to a Boston Herald report, the breach occurred when Hernandez was transferred to a Suffolk County, Boston jail during his first murder trial.

"During a routine security check, our Sheriff's Investigative Division discovered that Securus' telephone database had been accessed for calls relating to detainee Hernandez," Suffolk Sheriff's Department spokesman Peter Van Delft said in a prepared statement.
Prosecutors also deny having any knowledge that Hernandez's phone calls were tapped.
