The guy who once appeared to be a lowly backup to once-thought franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III has officially made himself Washington's quarterback. Kirk Cousins was given a non-exclusive franchise tag from the Redskins on Tuesday, as first reported from 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C.

According to Pro Football Talk, the Redskins are prepared to shell out a whopping $19.953 million to the quarterback, who played in a total just 14 games during the 2012-14 seasons before playing in all 16 last year. Cousins was able to put up solid numbers last year, throwing for 4,166 yards and 29 touchdowns along with 11 interceptions.
The move to franchise tag Cousins isn't all that surprising, given the forthcoming release of quarterback Robert Griffin III, as well as the, for the most part, lackluster quarterback options in this year's draft class that would be available to the Redskins in the NFL Draft. It's safe to say things have worked out quite nicely for Cousins.
