Not only that, but with the seriousness of concussions, who knows when Palmer will see the field again ... or whether the slightest hit could cause a relapse.

Already, there are suggestions that the Cards should make a call about a quarterback.

Palmer concussed. #Cards 1-3. A win now team spiraling. #Saints should make the call today & see if AZ has interest in trading for Brees.

True, Palmer's injury is bad news for a team hoping to build on the momentum of last year's appearance in the NFC championship game (a loss to to the Carolina Panthers). If Palmer can't go —- and head coach Bruce Arians said he'll be very careful with his prized signal caller —-  either Drew Stanton or Chase Keenun will line up over center. Neither are inspiring choices.

But it's also true that an aging (37) Brees won't come cheap even if the Saints were interested in trading him, and that seems like a real longshot. The team just inked him to a two-year deal that keeps him in New Orleans until he's 39, and there's no other viable option.

Palmer 's was sacked by Aaron Donald and Eugene Sims, and his head hit th ground hard.
