Tanner McKee is a consensus top-50 player in the Class of 2018 and the 247Sports composite ranks him as the No. 3 pro-style quarterback in the country. However, McKee won't be playing college football in 2018 and that comes as a result of a plan to spend two years on a Mormon mission.
Adam Kramer of Bleacher Report caught up with McKee this week and he brings word of the decision, even with the caveat that the 6'6, 220-pound prospect from Centennial High School (Calif.) plans to commit on National Signing Day.
"To me, it's about being dedicated to what you believe in. Other people are going to think I'm nuts for going out for two years, but I feel like this will help me in the long run. You don't have to just pick football or your faith. You can balance them and have both."
McKee is outspoken about his faith and it takes that conviction in order to put off football (and many other things) for two years. Still, he plans to attend the college that he commits to and McKee emphasized that.
"If a head coach leaves or there are major changes in program, then maybe I re-evaluate. But I'm not halfway in, halfway out unless something drastic happens."
It remains to be seen as to what kind of college football player McKee will be upon his return but, more than that, this is an impressive young man that is displaying a mature mindset. Best of luck to him.
