Louisville defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach Peter Sirmon has resigned, as initially reported by Sports Illustrated's Bruce Feldman and confirmed by head coach Bobby Petrino.

Bobby Petrino has confirmed that Sirmon has stepped down as defensive coordinator: “I would like to thank Peter Sirmon for all his work this season at the University of Louisville. I wish him and his family all the best.”

Sirmon has reportedly accepted the associate defensive head coach and inside linebackers coach at Cal, according to college football insider Brett McMurphy.

Sirmon, a former NFL linebacker, joined the Cardinals' staff in January after serving as Mississippi State's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for one season. He had previously served as a defensive assistant at USC (2014-15), Washington (2012-13), Tennessee (2010-11), Oregon (2009) and Central Washington (2008).
Louisville ranked 62nd among FBS teams in total defense, averaging 388.1 yards allowed per game during the coordinator's only season with the team.
Sirmon, a fourth-round draft pick, spent his entire NFL career with the Tennessee Titans, which spanned seven seasons from 2000-06.
He is also the father of Washington signee Jack Sirmon, who rates as a 3-star linebacker and ranks as the No. 25 outside linebacker for the 2018 national recruiting cycle, according to 247Sports.
