Georgia Bulldogs assistant coach Jay Valai is reportedly leaving the program for a job with the Kansas City Chiefs.
ESPN's Adam Rittenberg reported the news on Monday.
A team as successful as Georgia losing quality assistant coaches following a splendid season isn't anything new. It is something Kirby Smart, a former member of the Alabama Crimson Tide coaching staff, has to realize from his own experiences.
Nevertheless, the move by Valai to the National Football League has to be a bit gutting.
Valai, who is a graduate of Wisconsin and played safety for the Badgers from 2007-2010, is expected to be named the NFL franchise's defensive quality control coach. It is the same position he held with the Bulldogs.
In four years playing collegiate football, Valai totaled 154 tackles and 2 interceptions in 48 games played.
When his college career ended, Valai was a trainer in Texas assisting high school and professional athletes before taking a position with Georgia.
Having only been hired in 2016, this could be considered a rather meteoric rise by Valai. In a matter of a couple of years, he managed to parlay working out high school kids into a job coaching in the NFL.
At the time of this writing, no official announcement by the university or the coach has been made.
