Legendary SEC head coach facing bizarre lawsuit over car crash

A lawsuit has been filed against legendary Auburn coach Pat Dye over a car accident that occurred over the summer. The accident occurred on July 6, and the police report mentions that Dye travelling southbound on a Macon (AL) County road crossed the median and struck another vehicle driven by Jimmie Lee McCoy.

The accident occurred on July 6, and the police report mentions that Dye — travelling southbound on a Macon (AL) County road — crossed the median and struck another vehicle driven by Jimmie Lee McCoy. No arrests or criminal charges were filed over the accident.

However, McCoy has civil suit has been filed in Macon County Circuit Court contending that Dye was drunk at the time of the accident, and that Dye later held the other driver against his will. Dye denied the allegations to AL.com and says that he fell asleep at the wheel when the accident occurred.

Dye was the coach at Auburn for 12 seasons between 1981 and 1992. In those 12 seasons, Auburn won the SEC four times and the Tigers finished in the AP Top 10 a total of five times. In 2005, Auburn renamed the playing field at Jordan-Hare Stadium to "Pat Dye Field" in his honor.
