It is not unusual for top-flight prospects to commit to blue blood programs early in the recruiting process before subsequently changing direction in the form of a decommitment. That story has now officially transpired for 2019 cornerback prospect Jeffery Carter, who announced on Thursday evening that he will be stepping back from a verbal pledge to join Lincoln Riley and his staff at Oklahoma.

Carter, who stands at 6-feet and 180 pounds, committed to the Sooners back in July, but it is always important to note that the process is a (very) long one. In fact, Carter makes sure to note that Oklahoma is still in the mix at this time and the rest of his recruiting process will be quite interesting to monitor as a result.
Programs like Texas, Georgia, Texas A&M and others are reportedly pursuing the talented defensive back from Aledo (Tex.) and he currently ranks as the No. 209 player nationally according to the 247Sports composite rankings. That is good enough for a four-star designation and, even if Carter does not become a full-fledged star at the next level, it is very easy to see the talent that programs around the country are battling for on the recruiting trail.
Now, that battle seems more like a fair fight.
