Butch Jones and the Tennessee Volunteers have plenty of talent on the roster, even if that talent has not necessarily lived up to the bill in terms of recent results. With that said, the Vols are losing a big-time contributor to transfer in the form of safety Stephen Griffin and Tennessee's loss is another program's gain at this point.
On Monday, the NC State Wolfpack announced that Griffin will official join the program as a transfer and he will have two years of eligibility remaining after taking the year off in 2017 to fulfill NCAA transfer obligations. In conjunction, head coach Dave Doeren released the following statement:
"We're very excited to welcome Stephen to the Wolfpack family. We recruited him in high school at South Meck and wanted him here then. He comes from a great family and adds another top in-state player from the Charlotte area to our roster."
Griffin went to Tennessee out of high school but he is from the Charlotte area as a graduate of South Mecklenburg High School. At the time, Griffin ranked as a consensus three-star prospect but he was a big factor for the Vols as a rotational safety last year, including a start in his final game wearing orange.
At NC State, Griffin should be expected to compete for a starting position immediately in 2018 and having two years of eligibility is significant. This is a very nice addition for the Wolfpack.
