Selena Gomez has more followers on Instagram than a lot of the pop heavyweights you'd think are way more popular.
Last year, the title of Instragram queen traded hands between some of the usual suspects. Beyonce started off with the most followers when she reached 42.9 million followers in August of 2015, then the title went to reality star Kim Kardashian, who boasted 44.1 million. Then it went to Gomez's fellow pop star Taylor Swift, who had 45.6 million followers in September of 2015.

One year later, Gomez, 24, has a staggering 98.6 million followers (about 8 million more than Taylor Swift at the moment), and her strategy for being one of the most popular celebrities on social media isn't much of a strategy at all.
"It comes in a moment when I capture something happening, and I go: 'Oh, that would be great for Instagram. I should post it.' I know it's boring, but that's genuinely what I do.," She told the Hollywood Reporter in July. "It wasn't my goal to be the most-followed person. It's my favorite social platform. I'm not sure there's a method to my madness."
