Arizona has suddenly fired head coach Rich Rodriguez:

Arizona will honor the remainder of Rich Rodriguez's contract. he was informed tonight that he has been terminated immediately.

Rich Rodriguez was fired at #Arizona without cause. I'm told by a source at U of A this move was strictly for football reasons and due to the direction of the program.

Here's the statement released from the school:

"After conducting a thorough evaluation of our football program and its leadership, both on and off the field, President Robbins and I feel it is in the best interest of the University of Arizona and our athletics department to go in a new direction," Athletics Director Dave Heeke said.

First reports of Rodriguez's potential firing came from a USA Today report.

The Wildcats lost four of their last five games last season. Rodriguez was under contract with Arizona through 2020.

Additionally, an outside law firm investigated Rodriguez for workplace misconduct and no misconduct was determined last fall. The former administrative assistant has threatened to file a lawsuit.

The 54-year-old head coach just finished his sixth season at Arizona.

Rodriguez coached seven seasons at West Virginia, rattling off double-digit wins in each of his last three years with the Mountaineers. He'd spend the next three tumultuous seasons at Michigan before landing the Wildcats job in 2012.
