Former New England Patriots and Florida Gators tight end was found dead in his cell Wednesday morning hanging in his single cell at around 3:05 a.m. EST and was later declared dead that morning. The officer that was on duty during that time has been punished according to ABC News' Michele McPhee.

The Department of Correction officer that was on the former tight end's cell block has been "detached with pay" after being accused of not performing 2 a.m. rounds. Hernandez was found by corrections officers hanging in his single cell on Wednesday morning after utilizing bed sheets attached to his cell window, according to Christopher M. Fallon of the Massachusetts Department of Correction.
Attempts were made to revive Hernandez, but he was pronounced dead shortly after at 4:07 a.m. EST at UMASS Leominster. It was a week ago that Hernandez was found not guilty for the deaths of two men in a 2012 double-murder case that took place in Boston's South End.
