Concession stands at Gillette Stadium reportedly charged fans $4.50 for tap water after running out of water bottles on Sunday, according to the Boston Globe.
On Monday, the franchise apologized through a spokesperson for the incident.
"We apologize. That should not have happened," Patriots spokesperson Stacey James said in a statement to reporters. "It is the first time that I have ever heard that complaint here. We are looking into the matter to ensure that it doesn't happen again."
Temperatures hit an unseasonably high 86 degrees in Foxborough, Massachusetts on Sunday, with the team doubling its inventory of water bottles prior to the Patriots' game against the Houston Texans, according to the Globe. That equaled nearly four times the inventory for an average game, however, each concession stand could only hold so many bottles.
After the bottles ran out, fans started asking for cups of tap water and were charged $4.50 or $5 per soda cup until more bottles were brought to stands throughout the stadium.
New England overcame the heat to defeat Houston 36-33, during Sunday's game.
