Herm Edwards Shuts Down Arizona States Turnover Curls

Some coaches allow crazy sideline antics like stormtroopers wildly jumping up and down on the during third downs. Others embrace crazy props like gaudy turnover chains and turnover thrones. Do you know who is not having any of it? Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards.

Once defensive back Chase Lucas intercepted a trick play pass on the first play from scrimmage against the Washington Huskies at Husky Stadium last Saturday, the redshirt sophomore went to Sun Devils sideline, grabbed a barbell, and started doing a few bicep curls with teammates and coaches cheering him on. No joke. It was as magnificent as it sounds.

The battle for the turnover gimmick is now over. ASU is out here busting out curls for the girls after turnovers.

But just when you thought the Sun Devils had their own unique way to celebrate takeaways by doing bicep curls on the sideline, the first-year Arizona State Sun Devils head coach squashed it for good Wednesday afternoon.

RIP ASUโ€™s turnover sideline curling. โ€œGreat idea โ€” not on my watch,โ€ coach Herm Edwards.

Welp. There's that. The only curls Arizona State players will be doing are in the weight room and definitely not on the field during games.

However, this cannot be too terribly surprising. After all, none of this was around when the 64-year-old Edwards played at San Diego State in the 1970s and in the NFL from 1977 through 1986 with the Philadelphia Eagles, Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams.

Heck, it wasn't even around when he coached the New York Jets from 2001-05 or the Kansas City Chiefs from 2006-2008.

Had Herm Edwards known about the curls before before the UW game, there's a good chance it never would have happened in the first place.

Things might have been different had Arizona State actually beat Washington instead of taking a 27-20 loss before facing Oregon State this weekend, too.

Nevertheless, the turnover curls were fun while it lasted, and although some team might steal the idea, it just won't ever be the same.
