The Gus Malzahn rumor mill continues to churn and it is providing endless content in advance of the 2017 Iron Bowl. At this point, nearly everyone has weighed in on whether Malzahn will (or should) bolt Auburn to go "home" in returning as the head coach of Arkansas but that didn't stop ESPN's Paul Finebaum from joining the chorus on Monday.
In visiting with The Opening Drive on WJOX in Birmingham, Finebaum indicated that, among other things, Malzahn "does not look happy" at Auburn and that it is "pretty tempting" to flee to Fayetteville.
"Sometimes things are just not meant to be. And I think if you look at his body of work, it has been inconsistent. He may be three or four games away from winning a national championship and somebody is probably going to bring this back as a hot take that didn't age well, but I know. I know this situation fairly well, and he does not look happy at Auburn. And if you're Arkansas and you come at him and say 'Coach, you tell us who you want to work with over the next couple of years and we'll hire that person. You do what you want. Clean slate.' To me, it's pretty tempting."
This isn't breaking new ground but, in the same breath, Finebaum is often quite plugged in around the SEC. Of course, it has to be noted that Auburn emerging victorious in the Iron Bowl could change things quite a bit, if only because Auburn would jump to the forefront as a legitimate CFP contender in that instance.
Still, the buzz continues and it is impossible to ignore that subplot right now.
