Slade-Matautia is the No. 2 recruit in the state of Hawaii according to 247Sports and the No. 18 outside linebacker in the class of 2017. He was believed to be down to Nebraska and Oregon in his commitment, but also had offers from Arizona, Hawaii, Arizona State and Colorado among a few others.
