Former Virginia Tech and four-star running back Shai McKenzie announced almost seven months ago that he was transferring from the program. Despite all of the restrictions placed on him by the school, McKenzie has found a new home and he'll be moving down in the ranks of D-I to FCS to play for Hampton as the Hampton News Daily is reporting.
He was hit with a bevy of restrictions including not being able to transfer to any other ACC school as well as any opponent VT would face in the next two years. That includes Notre Dame, West Virginia, East Carolina, Old Dominion, Delaware and William & Mary.
However, with his decision to go to a FCS school he can play immediately and then even transfer back up to FBS after this season without having to sit a year. Only one recruit in Tech's class was rated higher than McKenzie in the 2014 cycle, but he could never quite get on the field consistently. He played in five games his freshman season and looked good until he suffered a torn ACL. The lingering effects of that caused him to ultimately redshirt the 2015 season and he was only able to play in five more games this past season.
