In his MMA debut, former pro wrestler CM Punk got absolutely decimated from the opening bell, was taken the ground by Mickey Gall, controlled and quickly submitted.
Gall only had two professional fights heading into his bout with Punk, who made a much-discussed transition from the pro wrestling world to the UFC.
Punk came out on the offensive and was clearly overmatched once the fight got to the ground. Gall ground-and-pounded Punk before transitioning over to the submission.
Many fighters had been vocal about Punk's transition, with mostly a negative reaction that a guy with no fighting background had been afforded an opportunity to fight in the top-tier organization while most other fighters had to claw their way to the top through other promotions.
Punk is the second fighter to make a transition from WWE to UFC, following in the footsteps of Brock Lesnar. Lesnar, of course, had a background in wrestling and was an amatuer champion before taking his talent to the WWE.
Punk had multiple setbacks before debuting in the UFC, including having back surgery back in February.
Gall (-400) was a heavy Vegas favorite heading into the fight. After the loss, Punk maintained that he will fight again and this isn't a one-time deal.
