Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez fought to a highly scrutinized draw back in September and, since that day, there has been plenty of speculation as to when and if a rematch would take place. On Monday, the second installment was formally announced and it will take place on May 5.

While the location is still up for grabs at this point (with various buzz surrounding Las Vegas and New York City) as options, the final announcement was simply a confirmation of what many expected for a long time. In fact, Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times recently spoke with Eric Gomez, the president of Golden Boy Promotions (on Alvarez's side of the equation) and he said the following about the second fight, with the keen factor of no automatic rematch clause.
"It's going to be another great fight, so it'll likely be a natural to do another rematch, but it's not in the agreement. We want to concentrate on getting this [second Alvarez-Golovkin fight] done and then we can talk about a third fight later."
It will be very interesting to see the result here, especially without a firm third match to count on in the future. Regardless, the boxing world now has a few months to look forward to a potential epic and the sport could use that kind of attention.
