Bob Stoops calls out his own quarterback after loss to Ohio State

A lot of people have been criticizing Oklahoma backup quarterback Austin Kendall lately. Kendall made some comments ahead of the Sooners' game against No. 2 Ohio State, essentially saying that starter Baker Mayfield would light up the Buckeyes' basic defense.

A lot of people have been criticizing Oklahoma backup quarterback Austin Kendall lately. Kendall made some comments ahead of the Sooners' game against No. 2 Ohio State, essentially saying that starter Baker Mayfield would "light up" the Buckeyes' "basic defense".

Suffice to say, Kendall was wrong about that assessment. The Buckeyes dominated, limiting Mayfield to only 226 passing yards and forcing two picks. Seems far from the "basic defense" that Kendall described.

On Monday, Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops finally acknowledged that his backup quarterback made a major mistake.

"I don't know what he could've been watching, to be quite honest with you," Stoops said on Kendall in a presser on Monday. "He must not have watched any tape, if he had that to say."

Yikes.

It's one thing to slip up and give your opponent some bulletin board material; Kendall is young and he will learn that part. However, to get called out by your coach as if you haven't watched any tape... that doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.

Oklahoma will get a BYE week to recover from their 1-2 start, but it doesn't get any easier in the coming weeks. They have a game at TCU on Oct. 1, and then the Sooners follow that up with their annual rivalry game against Texas.

Oklahoma could very easily start the season with a 1-4 record. That would be a hard fall after grabbing a spot in the College Football Playoff last year.
