Former No. 1 overall recruit makes decision on his football future

Trenton Thompson has not played as well as he would have hoped this year for Georgia after only recording 38 total tackles, 3.5 for loss and one pass break up. However, that is not stopping the former No. 1 overall recruit from declaring for the NFL Draft.

After long discussion with my family and coaches I have decided to enter the 2018 NFL Draft. I would like to thank my family, teammates, Coach Smart and the rest of the staff for all of their support the last 3 years. Coming to Athens was the best decision of my life and the memories and friendships I've made will last a lifetime. Playing in the NFL has been a lifelong dream of mine and I'm excited to see what the future holds. Even though I'm moving on to the next chapter, Georgia will always be home! I certainly want to thank the greatest fans in the country for their passion and support! Thank you Jolly Nation and Go Dawgs!!

The 6-foot-3, 313-pound defensive tackle could have come back and try to get back to the National Championship Game, but if he got some good feedback from the NFL, then it's pretty hard to pass up. Thompson was phenomenal in his sophomore season when he recorded 56 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, five sacks and a pass break up.

NFL teams will surely hope to see the sophomore version of Thompson in workouts and at the NFL Combine come March.
