Sometimes there is so much going in a category that a broad definition is the only way to explain it. Thus, web design is a system that encompasses everything that goes into the creation and upkeep of a website. This could range from software to SEO and other features.

There are different types of web design and if you are a designer you should keep these points in mind

  • The Hardware and Operating System
  • Browser Preference
  • Additional Toolbars
  • Screen Resolution

While the fixed web design is common, today we shall discuss two other types- the elastic design and the fluid design.

The elastic web design, as the name suggests is a combination of the fixed and the fluid design. It uses something called an ‘em’ which is a font size, doubled. Since fonts themselves come in all sizes and shapes, users can see their preferences come to life. It goes without saying that this design type has an almost personalized appeal to the users.

If you’re on the creative side and are into designing, you will love the combination of fixed and fluid with their added advantages. Since you use both types, you can also minimize the negatives of both designs. Apps can be enjoyed better and if you have a lot of experience on the net, then you’ll find this easier to work with.

The fluid web design is adjustable and you can give widths to layouts and margins. This liquid design can be adjusted according to the user’s preferences and browser settings. There are other advantages including aesthetic appeal brought about by the added white space and a better design that does away with the need for bars to scroll from one end of the screen to the other. Gaming consoles and phones stand to gain from this and it is enhances the experience a lot more for the tech savvy user.

While you might get confused at first glance between an elastic and a fluid design, remember the basic difference is that the former utilizes ‘em’s’ and the latter ‘percentages’.  An elastic design is also a lot more labor intensive and involves hours of testing before you get it right. It is tougher to create too, since it combines two separate web designs. You might also find that it does not run on certain browsers like Internet Explorer 6.

The fluid design differs in the sense that while it is easy to set up, you might need to set various parameters for media like video and pictures so as to make them user-friendly on all screens. Since it comes with white space, it might give a sense of emptiness or a lack of content. The elastic web design, with its ease of use of different information and options, makes for an interactive, content rich experience.

Thus, both elastic and fluid come with their own share of unique perspectives and you can decide what works the best for you.
