According to a Miami Herald report, Smith had been arguing with his girlfriend — identified as Mary Gaspar — the day of the attack, allegedly over attention issues. Eventually Gaspar brought boiling water into the argument and poured it on Smith's head.

The two argued through the day over the attention Smith was paying her and their relationship. While in Smith's dorm room and "feeling extremely emotional and stressed," she told police, she boiled a pot of water. Then, she walked over to Smith and poured it on him.

Gaspar also punched Smith after the initial attack, per the arrest affidavit. The severity of the burns to Smith are unknown, but the injuries to his head, neck, back, and arm are expected to be the end of his senior season.

Gaspar is facing aggravated assault charges for the incident.

Smith has 1,936 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns in his career at FIU. The Herald describes the 6-foot-3 receiver as a potential late round draft pick.
