According to Chris Simms — Phil's son — the CBS commentator was kept in the dark about the Romo hiring until it was confirmed. There had been rumors for weeks that CBS wanted to hire Romo, but it sounds like Simms wasn't completely clued in until late in the game.

From Chris Simms' Bleacher Report podcast: (H/T New York Post)

"He's good. If there's anything he is a little disappointed is that they didn't talk to him right away and warned him this was happening," Chris said on the "Lefkoe & Simms" podcast. "That's not what you do for a good, hard-working employee who's been with you 20 years and the face of your football station. From that, it probably does hurt.

"I don't know if my dad would be happy with me saying this: You can't sit there as a normal person out there and look at this and say they handled it like professionals. [The possibility] has been out there for two weeks."

According to the Post, a CBS spokeswoman said that Simms was not kept in the dark about Romo's hiring, stating that both Simms and his agent were aware of the move.

Simms has been with CBS for 19 years as a commentator for their NFL games. He also worked for ESPN and NBC after a 14-season career in the NFL.
