However, there was some drama before his announcement as four-star defensive end Jarez Parks was trying to commit to Alabama, but there wasn't enough room in the class. But Nick Saban, being the greatest coach of all-time found a way to convince Parks to take a greyshirt for a year so that Ray could join the class immediately and Parks wouldn't count against Alabama's recruiting count.

He was also believed to be "warm" on Florida and Tennessee in his recruitment. He also had offers from Ole Miss, Auburn, Florida State, Michigan and Louisville among many others.
