The Dallas Cowboys have been hopeful to see linebacker Jaylon Smith back on the field before next year, and coach Jason Garrett expects Smith to join the team's rookie camp next weekend.

Smith was drafted by the team in the second round of the 2016 draft, but he missed his rookie year due to an ACL injury suffered in his last collegiate game at Notre Dame. Smith has suffered nerve damage from the injury, but it is healing and the team expects him to contribute in 2017.
Garrett told reporters he believes Smith will join the other rookies during camp.
"My understanding is he will be allowed to be in it," Garrett said. "The discussions we've had over the last few days, my understanding is he's allowed to be in it."
Smith will wear a brace next year, but the team is pleased with his progress during rehab.
Jerry Jones said they have received encouraging reports from doctors regarding Smith, and the team will monitor him during workouts and practices to ensure he responds well.
It's very promising news for the Cowboys, who need help on defense after losing several starters in free agency. Smith was projected to be a first round pick before his injury.
