Livan Hernandez, former MLB pitcher who finished up a 17-year career back in 2012, filed for bankruptcy according to the Miami Herald despite making more than $48 million over his career.
The 42-year-old Hernandez reportedly owes up to $1 million to 50 creditors, back taxes and $220,000 to a local businessman on a loan. He filed Chapter 13 bankruptcy, which reportedly will allow him to come up with a plan to pay back creditors.
The filing says Hernandez is worth less than $50,000.
Hernandez defected from Cuba in 1995, signed with the Miami Marlins in 1996 and went on to lead the organization to a World Series championship in 1997.
Hernandez was a two-time All-Star while playing for the Marlins, San Francisco Giants, Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Minnesota Twins, Colorado Rockies, New York Mets, Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers over his career.
