If ESPN breaks up Mike and Mike, here's who could reportedly replace Greenberg

According to Sports Illustrated, per Richard Deitsch, ESPN is considering breaking up the Mike & Mike radio broadcast team of Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg in an effort to give Greenberg his own "Sportscenter-like" show on the network.

If that happens, the report notes Greenberg's replacement could be Mike Golic's son, Mike Golic Jr., which would form a Golic and Golic show.

"Some at ESPN have postulated that Golic would join his son Mike Jr. (who also works at ESPN Radio) in some sort of Golic & Golic show. But it seems a long shot that such a new show would immediately become ESPN Radio's signature flagship morning show."

Deitsch notes that the break up is in the exploratory process and that the network is a long ways away from anything being official.

The impetus behind the move would be in response to declining Sportscenter ratings. The network's flagship show has been declining in numbers for several years now, so much so that the ESPN 2 simulcast of the Mike & Mike radio show actually competes with Sportscenter airings on the company's main channel. Apparently the thought at ESPN is that a Greenberg-fronted show could boost ratings.

Greenberg and Golic have been radio partners since 1998, making them one of the longest-running tandems in sports media. The two have one of the better radio shows out there, and it would be a shame to see them broken up for a pure ratings grab that might have trivial results.
