According to multiple media reports, former NFL and Nebraska running back Lawrence Phillips died on Wednesday after being found unresponsive in his prison cell. He was 40 years old. Officials currently say that suicide was the likely cause of Phillips' death.
Phillips was in prison serving a 31-year sentence for charges related to choking his girlfriend and driving his car into a group of teenagers. Phillips had also been recently charged with murdering his cellmate via strangulation back in April.
Phillips played for St. Louis, Miami, and San Francisco during his NFL career. Phillips was a standout running back at Nebraska, rushing for 3,102 yards and 30 touchdowns in his career with the school. Phillips helped lead the Cornhuskers to a national title in 1994, as the running back led the team with over 1,800 yards that season.
