Months later, Orgeron finally commented on the situation, and he seemed convinced Kiffin was going to leave Alabama for Baton Rouge before he was hired by the Owls.
"We were looking at Lane Kiffin," Orgeron said according to The Advocate. "He was going to come. He got a head job."

Orgeron and Kiffin were assistants together at USC under Pete Carroll, and Orgeron was the interim coach for the Trojans after Kiffin was fired midseason.
Kiffin was interested in the job, especially after it became obvious his tenure at Alabama was coming to a close.
After Kiffin took the job at Florida Atlantic, Orgeron hired Matt Canada to be the LSU offensive coordinator.
It would have been fascinating to see Kiffin leave Nick Saban and Alabama for a lateral job at a rival school, but another head coaching job was simply too hard to pass up for Kiffin.
