Fitzgerald was a walk-on defensive tackle at Maryland and has worked as a strength coach at several schools, including Arizona State, Harvard and South Carolina. He has spent the past seven seasons working under Texans head coach Bill O'Brien, dating back to his tenure at Penn State in 2011.
Fitzgerald is certified as a strength and conditioning specialist through both the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches association (CSCCa), according to the team's website.
He also received the certification of Master Strength and Conditioning Coach by the CSCCa in May 2010, which is considered the highest honor among strength and conditioning coaches.
Houston won two division titles during Fitzgerald's tenure with the franchise.
