Broncos Quarterback Arrested in Bizarre Late-Night Trespassing Saga

Absolutely nothing good can happen after midnight. Whether its a night out for drinks or a couple of kids causing mischief on a weekend night, there's seldom a time where you'll find a positive story come out of the middle of the night, especially at 1:15 a.m. on a Tuesday morning.

Absolutely nothing good can happen after midnight. Whether its a night out for drinks or a couple of kids causing mischief on a weekend night, there's seldom a time where you'll find a positive story come out of the middle of the night, especially at 1:15 a.m. on a Tuesday morning.

Denver Broncos quarterback Chad Kelly is no stranger to being wrapped in controversy, but the team's general manager, John Elway, still felt comfortable enough to select Kelly with the final pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. "Mr. Irrelevant" has found himself in more trouble after being arrested and charged with first-degree criminal trespassing on Tuesday, and it's a story with so many more questions than answers.

Police officers from the Englewood Police Department responded to a call of a man standing outside a residential home early Tuesday morning. According to the arrest affidavit, one of the homeowners was sitting with her child when a man entered the home and sat on their couch, mumbling incoherently to himself. That's when she called to a male resident of the home who hit the intruder on the back with an aluminum vacuum tube and forced him out of the home.

According to KDVR News in Denver, security footage revealed a man wearing "disheveled" clothing entering the home. Police found a man matching that description in a black SUV not far from the house, who the male homeowner quickly identified as the home's invader.

The man identified himself as Chad Kelly, who was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal trespassing and booked into Arapahoe County Jail.

The first impression upon hearing the details is to think that Kelly was drunk. In fact, police said that while the investigation is ongoing, Kelly had no alcohol present in his system at the time he was arrested.

Kelly was released Tuesday morning on a $2,500 bond, according to the Associated Press.

The Denver Broncos organization released the following statement after the news of Kelly's arrest.

"We are disappointed that Chad Kelly was arrested early this morning. Our organization has been in contact with Chad, and we are in the process of gathering more information"

The seventh-round pick has a history of troubling behavior that started during his time as a member of the Clemson Tigers. In April 2014, Kelly was dismissed by head coach Dabo Swinney for conduct detrimental to the team. Swinney said of Kelly, "He has had a pattern of behavior that is not consistent with the values of our program."

In December 2014, Kelly was arrested after fighting nightclub bouncers and police in Buffalo, New York. During the incident, Kelly allegedly said, "I'm going to go to my car and get my AK-47 and spray this place."

After a year at East Mississippi Community College, Kelly became the starting quarterback for the Ole Miss Rebels. Over two seasons, he racked up 7,816 total yards and 66 total touchdowns including a school record 4,042 passing yards in 2015. He was also named the 2016 Sugar Bowl MVP after the Rebels knocked off the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

A torn ACL and lateral meniscus injury in November of his senior year sidelined Kelly indefinitely, which helped lead to his slide to the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Sidelined his rookie year following wrist surgery, he beat out former first round pick Paxton Lynch for the Broncos backup quarterback job behind Case Keenum after a solid showing during the 2018 NFL preseason.

The nephew of NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, Chad Kelly's future with Denver is uncertain as this bizarre investigation is ongoing, and a lot of questions into Kelly's character, and state of mind during the incident, are answered.
