Texas Tech offensive lineman Tony Morales is attempting to do something that would make Ryan Reynolds' character Van Wilder proud.
According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Morales will meet with the Texas Tech compliance personnel toward the end of the 2017 season in hopes of earning an eighth season of eligibility, which an NCAA official told the newspaper that she believes would be the first athlete in any sport to have sought and granted such.
Morales was granted a sixth season of eligibility in March 2016 and a seventh last November.
The Arlington native missed his entire true freshman season in 2011 due to an injury he experienced in summer camp and followed suit for the next three consecutive seasons.
Morales' injuries have included a torn labrum in his right shoulder (2011); a strained knee ligament (2012); a torn labrum in his left shoulder (2013); and another knee issue in 2014. Morales finally made it through training camp and started in six games at right guard during the 2015 season. In 2016, he made 12 starts for Texas Tech.
Entering his seventh season, Morales is currently listed as the Red Raiders' backup center.
