The 1993 Florida State-Notre Dame game was one of the most hyped college football games of its time. Notre Dame entered the game No. 1 in the nation. Florida State was No. 2.
The winner of this game was supposed to be a lock to play in the national championship.
Down 14 with 1:39 left in the game, 1993 Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward led the Noles on a furious comeback. Ward hit Kez McCorvey on a 4th and 20 TD that bounced off a Notre Dame defender. The Fighting Irish then went 3-and-out. FSU had one final shot to force overtime.
Ward led the Noles down to the Irish's 14-yard line with three seconds left. He had a wide open receiver in the endzone, but didn't see him. Ward's pass was batted down and the game was over.
The Irish won 31-24. They were guaranteed to play Nebraska in the national championship.
However, Notre Dame choked the following week against Boston College, losing to the Eagles. FSU took ND's spot in the national championship game and eventually beat Nebraska.
Since the 1993 game of the century, FSU has 204 wins, 15 bowl victories and 3 national titles. ND has 158, 4 and 0.
