An NFL team made a laughable decision and paid a player based on anticipation

The only real issue with his extension is that Austin hasn't quite lived up to the hype he entered the NFL with in 2013, as the No. 8 overall pick. Blame it on the quarterback situation or the abyss that is St. Louis (and now L.A.), but his paltry receiving numbers leave a lot to be desired.

In three years, Austin has racked up just 1,133 yards receiving and nine touchdowns, while rushing for 809 yards and seven scores.

So why the extension? According to coach Jeff Fisher, it's not about what he's done, but what he will do in the future.

"It's our anticipation of what he's going to do," Fisher told reporters. "We've seen what he's capable of and we're hoping we're going to get a lot more than what we've seen in the past."

Austin also has three punts returned for touchdowns—one in each season—and that wasn't lost on Fisher, saying that he's "very, very talented with the ball in his hands," and that he's had several more returns that were called back because of penalties.

If the issues for Austin really do tie back to the quarterbacks he's had and Goff is the answer, he'd better buy his quarterback a really nice gift with the money he's being paid.
