A man has been arrested in the shooting of a former high school football player that destroyed his dream of playing in college, left him a quadriplegic, and eventually killed him.

Hamilton Croft, 38, has been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder in connection with the shooting and eventual death of Daniel Flowers, who was 24 when he died.

Croft appeared in Nassau County (NY) Court today and had a next appearance scheduled for March 3. There was no word, on the court's website, on official charges.

Flowers, who played on the Freeport (NY) High School football  team with dreams of playing in college. But those dreams were destroyed on the night of July 3, 2011, when a gunman opened fire outside of a Long Island, New York, bar. Flowers was shot once in the neck, hit the ground, and never got up again.

The shooting made him a quadriplegic, and he died five years later - Jan. 2, 2016 — from injuries sustained in the shooting, according to a report in Newsday. He was buried on the day he would have turned 25.

The suspect was arrested two months after police appealed for help in finding Flowers' killer, Newsday reported.

Strangely, a Facebook page belonging to someone identifying himself as Croft provides the address of the Nassau County Jail, and provides contact information.

The page also contained a post with a time stamp that says it was written today.
