The relationship between Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin was the stuff of legend. On one hand, Alabama's head coach is largely infallible based on an unending track record of success. On the other, Alabama's now-former offensive coordinator has a penchant for the dramatic and the microscope was seemingly always on Kiffin during his time in Tuscaloosa.
That brings us back to the 2016 sideline meltdown that occurred between the two men down the stretch of a win over Western Kentucky. Alabama radio analyst Phil Savage recent penned a book about the Crimson Tide and, within it, he reportedly included some very interesting insight on the famous argument.
Greg Stephenson of AL.com brings word:
Savage writes that Kiffin said into his headset "dumb players make dumb plays," which all the Crimson Tide coaches heard. Saban snapped back with "no, dumb offensive coordinators call dumb plays." There were probably a few expletives left out.
That is hilarious and it makes all the sense in the world that both sides could be agitated.
On one hand, Kiffin's barb toward the players was probably uncalled for, especially in the midst of a lopsided win. On the other, Saban going back at Kiffin is an all-timer and it was probably a sentiment that the head coach had bottled up for some time.
Stories between Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin will never get old and this is a good one.
