Johnson spent the past two seasons at Memphis coaching wide receivers, following four seasons at Tulane in which he coached both running backs and tight ends.

He also previously worked as the head coach of St. Augustine High School in New Orleans from 2009-11, which included coaching former LSU standout and current Arizona Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu, as noted by SEC Country's Connor Riley.

Memphis led the AAC with 335.0 passing yards per game and a total of 4,355 yards in 2017. The Tigers also ranked second the previous season with 3,957 yards and a 304.4 average.

Johnson is the second Memphis position coach to be hired by an SEC team this offseason. Georgia hired former Tigers assistant coach Dan Lanning to replace outside linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer, who accepted the defensive coordinator position at Tennessee last month.

Earlier this week, Pruitt confirmed that the wide receivers coach position was the only remaining vacancy on his staff during his press conference on Wednesday.

Tennessee will kickoff its season on Sept. 1 against West Virginia in Charlotte.
