I think we can all agree that Ivan Drago is far and away the greatest villain in all of the Rocky movies. Mr. T’s Clubber Lang is a very close second. Don’t get me wrong, Apollo’s Independence day outfit in Rocky and his smear campaign from Rocky II are amazing but it’s hard to even consider Apollo a villain when the two eventually became friends and were truly linked from the beginning. But there’s another pseudo villain in the Rocky films that everyone loves: Thunderlips. Played by Hulk Hogan, Thunderlips is a professional wrestler who’s been commissioned to do a charity fight with Rocky. To say the least, the fight winds up getting a little out of hand. “In the flesh, baby!” Anyway, some new revelations about that memorable scene have come to light on Sylvester Stallone’s Instagram page. Here they are:
“Believe it or not when he jumped into the audience to fight with the stuntmen, three of them had to be treated at the hospital,” Stallone wrote.
“I remember a violent move where he threw me into the corner , charged across the ring like an ENRAGED bull and leaped so amazingly high above me, that his shinbone actually came down giant tree on my collarbone, and I tumbled to the floor,” Stallone said. “I was afraid to look at my shoulder for about 10 minutes … I said ‘don’t roll me over, don’t move me,’ because I was sure there was bone protruding through my upper chest!”
Stallone would end the epic story by thanking the wrestling legend, saying “was a privilege to be mangled by such a gentleman.”
That just makes this scene 100 times better now. P.S. Paulie is the best part of this scene by far.
